The ordinary devoted mother

‘The whole procedure of infant care cannot be done by thought, nor can it be managed mechanically. It can only be done by continuous management by a human being who is consistently herself.

There is no question of perfection here. Perfection belongs to machines; what the infant needs is just what he normally gets, the care and attention of someone who is going on being herself‘ (Winnicott, 1963, p.87).
